Professor Mary Kalantzis was born in Valcouvina, Greece and arrived in Australia in 1953. Her work has been at the interface between community, industry and university. She holds a BA (Hons), with Majors in history and linguistics, a DipEd, and a PhD from the School of History, Philosophy and Politics, Macquarie University. Her thesis was entitled White Man Dreaming: Drawing Australia’s Cultural Boundaries, Changes in Commonwealth Immigration and Aboriginal Policies, 1945-67.

In 1982 Professor Kalantzis was the recipient of a Commonwealth Postgraduate Research Award and in 1990-91 she was a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at the University of New Hampshire in the United States.

Professor Kalantzis is Dean of the Faculty of Education, Language and Community Services at RMIT University. Formerly, she was Director of the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies at James Cook University of North Queensland, Director of the Centre for Workplace Communication and Culture at the University of Technology, Sydney and a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Multicultural Studies at the University of Wollongong. She has been a part time Commissioner of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and Chair of the Queensland Ethnic Affairs Ministerial Advisory Committee, whose role is to advise the Queensland Premier on all matters relating to multiculturalism.

Her publications include co-authorship of Mistaken Identity: Multiculturalism and the Demise of Nationalism in Australia with Castles, Cope and Morrissey, Pluto Press, Sydney, 1988/1990/1992; Minority Languages and Dominant Culture with Cope and Slade, Falmer Press, London, 1989; Cultures of Schooling: Pedagogies for Cultural Difference and Social Access, with Cope, Noble and Poynting, Falmer Press, London, 1990; Productive Diversity, Pluto Press, Sydney, 1997, Multiliteracies with Cope, Routledge, London, 2000 and A Place in the Sun, with Cope, HarperCollins Publishers, Australia, 2000.
