MESSAGE BY DR. OLGA SARANTOPOULOS FOR THE 91^ST ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATING THE GENOCIDE OF THE PONTIAN GREEKS 19^th May, 2010 

On May 19th the Hellenes all over the world pay homage to honor the victims of the

Genocide of the Pontian Greeks. This goes to the 353.000 souls, victims to one of the greatest crimes against humanity. Memories deeply rooted in the minds of our Pontian brothers, the ancestors of which experienced the tragedy, but also for all of us that we have a duty not to forget.  

The course throughout these 91 years lead the Pontian Hellenism to seek new homelands, where they developed roots and created their present drawing upon their fighting spirit, the values and the ideals of their brilliant civilization. They created and continue to create a future where the elders offer precious knowledge and the younger ones build on solid foundations the continuation of the Pontian Hellenism.  

Today, the Pontian Hellenism all over the world has been successful in establishing an international platform of their long standing demand about the recognition of the Pontian Genocide, to make it an issue regarding democracy and the violation of human rights, which involves the entire man kind. Already, very recently the Swedish Parliament recognized the Pontian Genocide and a little time before that the Parliament of South Australia. There will be others to follow, because history cannot be erased nor is it ever subject to statutory limitations.  

In this international endeavor, the Fellow Greeks of the Diaspora hold the star role. The coordinated effort, methodical tenacity, the presentation of historical data and the awareness of the public opinion gave rise to the conditions for the recognition of the Pontian Genocide. 

We claim the recognition as a prerequisite for the restoration of the historical truth and the avoidance of the sam mistakes in the future. Our neighbor country that is claiming a place within the European family, is obligated to come to terms with its past in order to ensure its future, on the road to becoming a democracy. The Hellenism of the Pontus is not out for any revenge, it is simply seeking its vindication.  

We, the Hellenes of the World, support our Pontian brothers in their claim for the international recognition of the Genocide. We ask for the teaching of the History of the Pontian and Asia Minor Hellenism to be included in the books of the Greek History, as well as to establish a University faculty of Pontian Hellenism.  

On this day we renew our promise and our commitment to not forget. It is our duty to deliver this trust to humanity, by condemning at the same time all of the modern day genocides.

Την 19^η Μαΐου οι Έλληνες του κόσμου αποτίνουν φόρο τιμής στα θύματα της Γενοκτονίας των Ελλήνων του Πόντου. Στις 353.000 ψυχές, θύματα ενός εκ των μεγαλύτερων εγκλημάτων κατά της ανθρωπότητας. Μνήμες βαθιά ριζωμένες στο νου των Ποντίων αδελφών μας, οι πρόγονοι των οποίων βίωσαν την τραγωδία, αλλά και όλων εμάς που σήμερα έχουμε χρέος να μην ξεχνούμε.  

Η πορεία σε αυτά τα 91 χρόνια, οδήγησε τον Ποντιακό Ελληνισμό σε νέες πατρίδες, όπου ρίζωσαν και δημιούργησαν το παρόν τους ακουμπώντας στο αγωνιστικό τους πνεύμα, στις αξίες και τα ιδανικά του λαμπρού τους πολιτισμού. Δημιούργησαν και δημιουργούν ένα μέλλον όπου οι παλαιότεροι προσφέρουν την πολύτιμη γνώση και οι νεότεροι χτίζουν σε γερά θεμέλια την συνέχεια του Ποντιακού Ελληνισμού.

Σήμερα, ο Ποντιακός Ελληνισμός ανά τον κόσμο, έχει επιτύχει να διεθνοποιήσει το αίτημα για την αναγνώριση της Ποντιακής Γενοκτονίας, να το καταστήσει ζήτημα δημοκρατίας και παραβίασης των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων, που αφορά ολόκληρη την ανθρωπότητα. Ήδη, πολύ πρόσφατα το Σουηδικό Κοινοβούλιο αναγνώρισε την Ποντιακή Γενοκτονία και λίγο καιρό πριν η Βουλή της Ν. Αυστραλίας. Θα ακολουθήσουν και άλλοι, διότι η ιστορία δεν παραγράφεται. 

Στην διεθνή αυτή προσπάθεια, η Ομογένεια έχει πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο. Η συντονισμένη προσπάθεια, η μεθοδικότητα, η παράθεση των ιστορικών στοιχείων και η ενημέρωση της κοινής γνώμης, δημιούργησαν τις προϋποθέσεις για την αναγνώριση και της Ποντιακής Γενοκτονίας. 

Ζητούμε την αναγνώριση ως προϋπόθεση για την αποκατάσταση της ιστορικής αλήθειας και της αποφυγής των ίδιων λαθών και στο μέλλον.  Η γείτονα χώρα που διεκδικεί την θέση της στην ευρωπαϊκή οικογένεια, οφείλει να αποδεχθεί το παρελθόν της για να εξασφαλίσει το μέλλον της, στον δρόμο για τον εκδημοκρατισμό της. Ο Ελληνισμός του Πόντου δεν επιζητεί εκδίκηση, επιζητεί δικαίωση.  

Εμείς οι Απανταχού Έλληνες στηρίζουμε τους Πόντιους αδελφούς μας στο αίτημά τους για την διεθνή αναγνώριση της Γενοκτονίας. Ζητούμε την διδασκαλία της Ιστορίας του Ποντιακού και Μικρασιατικού Ελληνισμού στα βιβλία της Ελληνικής Ιστορίας, αλλά και την ίδρυση Πανεπιστημιακής έδρας Ποντιακού Ελληνισμού.  

Την σημερινή ημέρα ανανεώνουμε την υπόσχεσή μας να μην ξεχάσουμε.  Την παρακαταθήκη αυτή έχουμε το χρέος να την παραδώσουμε στην ανθρωπότητα, καταδικάζοντας ταυτόχρονα όλες τις σύγχρονες γενοκτονίες.
